Can W-2 physicians do a backdoor Roth?
Generally, yes, if you follow the steps. Physicians whose income is above the Roth IRA limit can make a nondeductible traditional IRA contribution and convert it. The pro-rata rule counts all pre-tax IRA balances, so existing rollover IRAs can make part of the conversion taxable. File Form 8606.
What to check
- Pre-tax IRA balances on Dec 31
- Whether your employer plan accepts roll-ins
- Annual IRA limit (IRS)
- State tax on conversion
